SoHo

A question that’s been on my mind: can you make an interesting image out of an otherwise uninteresting scene? Some things are naturally interesting to look at. Take for instance this man, who stood in the doorway to the cafe while he lit his pipe:

Or this girl’s sweater and very round glasses:

Her outstretched arm:

But could an interesting and stimulating drawing be made of *every* person?

Take for instance this scene, which has no real dynamic interest or focus. Was the scene just boring? Or could it have been portrayed in a more interesting and provocative way (without fundamentally altering it)? Landscape painters who ‘fudge’ the landscape by adding a stand of trees here or delete a bluff there would say alter it. I’m not sure. One thing I do know is that an inherently interesting scene makes an interesting painting much *easier*!
